Jointly administered by the Institute for Public Service and Policy Research and the South Carolina Honors College at the University of South Carolina, the South Carolina Washington Semester Program (WSP) gives students the opportunity to gain valuable work experience while earning academic credit toward their degrees. In Washington, DC, WSP Fellows get first hand experience with the political process, obtaining skills and contacts that will help prepare them for careers in virtually any sphere.

This is a state-wide program available to qualified students attending the following South Carolina colleges and universities:

Charleston Southern University
The Citadel
Claflin University
Clemson University
Coastal Carolina University
College of Charleston
Francis Marion University
South Carolina State University
University of South Carolina- Columbia
University of South Carolina - Upstate
Wofford College
Winthrop University

Christen Green and Brandon Lever participated in the Fall 2007 Washington Semester Program.

As students meet interesting and influential people, they establish contacts for personal and professional networking. In their jobs they respond to constituent needs and research a range of important legislative topics.

In the past, WSP Fellows have attended important events, such as a White House Arrival Ceremony for a visiting head of state, a joint session of Congress, and arguments before the Supreme Court.   Recent seminars have featured cabinet secretaries, key White House personnel, senior TV network correspondents, a Washington Post senior editor, lobbyists, embassy officials and other national leaders

But it's not all work. Students have time to tour the monuments, explore the museums and experience the international flavor of the world's most powerful capital.

During a recent visit to the Nation’s Capitol, representatives from participating universities spent time with The Honorable Jim Clyburn of South Carolina who represents the Sixth District.  The meeting was held in Representative Clyburn’s Majority Whip’s Office.  Shown are (from L to R):  Beth Burn, Program Manager of WSP; Brandon Lever, Fall 2007 WSP fellow; Dr. Davis Baird, Dean, South Carolina Honors College; Jim Clark, South Carolina Honors College; Congressman Jim Clyburn; Dr. Harriet Rowland, S.C. State Honors Program; Dr. Carl Carpenter, S.C. State Vice President; Dr. Clay Motley, Charleston Southern University Honors Program; Dr. Korey Rothman, Academic Director of WSP.
