Total Population

1.SOUTH CAROLINA TOTAL POPULATION

Definition: This information presents the total population for the years indicated from 1960 to 2007.

Significance: A state’s population impacts demand for goods and services and puts pressure on a state’s infrastructure. “Total population” is also important in understanding other conditions and circumstances affecting the state including, but not limited to, a state’s social and health characteristics and education.  State population numbers also affect eligibility for federal funding.

South Carolina’s population has grown from approximately 2.3 million in 1960 to 4.4 million people in 2007. When compared to the United States as a whole, South Carolina represented 1.5% of the national total population in 2007, compared to 1.3% in 1960.  However, as a percentage of total population in the Southeast, South Carolina’s numbers have fallen since 1960. South Carolina now comprises 7.4% of the total Southeastern population, down from 8.5% in 1960.
