Definition: This
information presents the total population for the years indicated
from 1960 to 2007.
Significance: A
state’s population impacts demand for goods and services and puts
pressure on a state’s infrastructure. “Total population” is also
important in understanding other conditions and circumstances
affecting the state including, but not limited to, a state’s social
and health characteristics and education. State population numbers
also affect eligibility for federal funding.

South Carolina’s population has
grown from approximately 2.3 million in 1960 to 4.4 million
people in 2007. When compared to the United States as a whole,
South Carolina represented 1.5% of the national total population
in 2007, compared to 1.3% in 1960. However, as a percentage of
total population in the Southeast, South Carolina’s numbers have
fallen since 1960. South Carolina now comprises 7.4% of the
total Southeastern population, down from 8.5% in 1960.
