Demography is the study of vital and social statistics. In many
cases, one can see the indicators that are addressed in each of the
eight major areas of the South Carolina Indicators Project as being
affected by underlying demographic characteristics. For example, one
may see growing urbanization resulting in increased levels of
pollution. Population increases may reflect a positive shift in
economic indicators. Demographic information may affect how one
views the indicators, or how policy responses are crafted. Because
this information is for background use in understanding the
indicators, comparative data and rankings are provided for
demographic characteristics as appropriate. Please follow the links
provided for more information.
