John earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from The Citadel and Associate in Business in Computer Programming from Midlands Technical College.  He has served two tours of active duty in the Air Force in strategic air defense and is a retired reserve officer.  John began his state service in 1976 with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control in the Bureau of Laboratories.  His IT career with the state started in 1978 as a computer programmer and he has held positions in customer support, technical support and management.  John started with the Institute in November 2001 after spending over five years as the IT director of a local phone company.  John has the following Microsoft certifications: Systems Engineer (MCSE), Systems Administrator (MCSA, MCSA:Messaging), and Professional (MCP).
