Beth
earned her both her Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and
her Master's in Public Administration from the
University of South Carolina. She has worked in higher
education for eighteen years. Beth joined the Institute
on a part-time basis in March 2000, working for Fred
Sheheen. She helped coordinate the research project,
"…And Miles to Go Before I Sleep," which examined the
status of African-Americans in South Carolina in
observation of the fifty-year anniversary of Brown
vs. Board of Education.
After
completing that project, she became the Program Manager
for the Washington Semester Program and the South
Carolina Semester Program. Additionally, she continues
to work on several public policy research projects which
are underway in the Institute.
Her
interest in education extends to K-12 education, where
she served two terms on the school board for
Lexington-Richland District 5. She has served in an
advisory role to the South Carolina School Boards'
Association through group meetings with the S.C.
Education Oversight Committee and as a co-leader in
strategic planning for education advocacy for school
boards across the state. She was a presenter at the
December 2001 Legislative and Advocacy conference for
the South Carolina School Boards Association. Burn also
served as a Master Board Trainer for the School
Boards' Association.
