Senator John W. Drummond: The Story of a South Carolinian, Military Hero, and Statesman—Part II

In a two-part series of Public Policy & Practice, the life and achievements of state Senator John W. Drummond are presented. In Part I, published in the May issue, the highlights of his life were covered, beginning with his childhood and youth through his heroic service during World War II. In this issue, Part II depicts his intervening years before politics and his more than 40 years as the Senator from Ninety Six.

 

The Hydrogen Economy and South Carolina’s Role

Hydrogen offers a possible long-term solution for a sustainable energy system that would address America’s future transportation requirements, including others. South Carolina and other states are investing resources in the research and development of a hydrogen economy, one of which is for vehicular fuel cell purposes. This article aims to provide information and data to assist in making sense of a hydrogen economy and its policy implications.

 

The South Carolina Indicators Project: Observations on the Use of Focus Groups

This article describes the Institute’s recent process by which a series of focus groups were conducted to critique and recommend enhancements to the South Carolina Indicators Project. Of particular significance, the discussion includes a summary description of what key observations were learned from this process. 

 

The Correlation of Fire Department Performance as to Improved Public Protection Classification Ratings

By William E. Tomes

 

In the May 2007 issue of Public Policy & Practice, the impacts of a fire department’s public protection classification on property and casualty insurance premiums were discussed. In consort with this earlier article, this paper looks at Public Protection Class (PPC) ratings from a national sample of fire departments to determine if those ratings are correlated with two common measures of performance.
