Faculty of the Center teach at the following levels:
- Undergraduate Education, University of South Carolina: The
Center sponsors a Program in Medical Humanities, and also sponsors
a Medical Humanities minor. To our knowledge, the latter
opportunity is unique in the United States. Dr. George Khushf,
Director for Humanities for the Center, initiated both of these
activities with assistance from a generous grant from the
Fullerton Foundation.
- Medical Education, the University of South Carolina School of
Medicine: The Center assumes responsibility for a vertical
curriculum in Bioethics and Professionalism—“vertical” in the
sense that students are exposed to these topics during each of the
four years of medical school. Lectures and a comprehensive course
during the first and second years are supplemented by small group
discussions at the end of the third year.
- Graduate Medical Education, Palmetto Health and other teaching
hospitals affiliated with the University of South Carolina School
of Medicine: Center faculty participate actively in resident
education, including monthly conferences on ethics-related topics
throughout the academic year.
- Continuing Medical Education for practicing physicians: Center
faculty participate in “CME” activities at numerous levels. Center
staff also participate actively in the Ethics Committee of the
South Carolina Medical Association, which has broad outreach to
practicing physicians in the Palmetto State.
- In-Service Education for Physicians and Other Health Care
Workers: Center faculty conduct in-service programs for health
care workers at various levels at hospitals affiliated with the
University of South Carolina School of Medicine.
- Health Sciences Schools, University of South Carolina: Center
faculty have taken a lead role in the development of
interdisciplinary courses in the health sciences schools
(medicine, nursing, public health, pharmacy, and social work).
