The Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities is the meeting place
for a variety of disciplines and studies whose central focus is
health care and human beings. The Center is the locus for
interdisciplinary research, education and service in bioethics and
medical humanities. Bioethics is understood broadly to include
ethical issues in clinical medicine, public health and health policy
and reform, and embraces theoretical reflection on the role of
values in health care professions. It also seeks to integrate the
humanities and medicine and the theoretical foundations for such
reflections, including ethical and political theory.
The Center is an outgrowth of collaborative teaching begun in 1985
by Drs. Donald E. Saunders, Jr., of USC School of Medicine and Nora
K. Bell of the USC Department of Philosophy. In 1994 the Center was
reorganized as the Joint Center for Bioethics and Medical
Humanities, co-sponsored by Richland Memorial Hospital (Palmetto
Health Alliance), the USC School of Medicine and the Institute for
Public Service and Policy Research. |
